To control the automated notifications you receive from Stitch, go to the Notifications Settings page.

Your Notification Settings control which email notifications you receive from Stitch about new groups and activities in your area, comments on events and activities, and new discussions posted in the discussion forums.

Here is what the Notifications page looks like:

Let's go through each section in turn.

Distance

Your Distance preference tells Stitch the distance it should use to determine which Groups and Activities it should tell you about.

If you live in a rural area, for example, you might be interested in attending activities and meeting people who live a long distance from you, while someone living in a big city might only be interested in things a few miles away. Use the Distance control to set the distance that makes most sense for you.

Stitch will use your Distance preference to determine:

  • When to tell you about new Groups created in your local area (with your "local area" defined by the distance you choose)

  • When to tell you about new Activities posted in your local area

  • Which Activities to show you at the top of the Activities page

  • Which Groups to show you at the top of the Groups page

If you set your Distance preference to ten miles, for example, you will only receive notifications about events and activities within that distance (subject to the notification settings you choose as outlined below).

Groups

Turn this setting on if you want to be notified about new Stitch Groups created in your local area. Your "local area" is defined by your Distance setting, as outlined above.

Events & activities

These settings control how you would like to receive notifications about new events and activities in your area. You can choose the following settings:

  • Every time an activity is created
Turn this setting on if you want to receive a separate notification for each event, as soon as it is published. This setting is disabled by default.

  • Daily summary of new activities
This setting determines whether you want to receive a daily summary of events created in your local area. Instead of receiving separate emails for each and every event, you will receive a daily summary of all events published that day. This setting is enabled by default.

  • Weekly summary of upcoming activities
This setting determines whether you want to receive an email telling you about the events coming up in your area each week. Activities are often created several weeks in advance, so if you missed the original invite, this email is a great way to know what's happening in the week ahead. This setting is enabled by default.

Note that the above settings are for general activities created in your area. If you have joined any Stitch Groups, you will be notified about every activity created in those groups, regardless how far away the activity is. This gives you much more control over which invitations you receive.

If you’re interested in being invited to anything to do with ballroom dancing, for example, you might join a Ballroom Dancing Group in your area. Or if you love the comedy events held in Manhattan, just join the Stitch Manhattan Comedy Group in order to be invited to those events.

You will receive event notifications for all Groups you have joined, regardless where those events are held.

This means that if you sometimes travel between different locations, for example, you can join groups in both locations in order to find out about events you’d like to attend. Or you may be so passionate about bird-watching that you are willing to travel hundreds of miles for a bird-watching expedition, so you join a bird-watching group that is far away from you, but keep the rest of your Stitch activities local.

It’s totally up to you!

Discussions

Turn this setting on if you want to be notified about new Stitch Discussions created in the Stitch forums. This setting is disabled by default.

Comments

Activities, Groups, and Discussions all allow members to post comments on them as a way to communicate to other members. You can choose to "follow" these conversations, which means you will receive a notification each time another member posts a comment.

If you join a Group or attend an Activity, you will not automatically follow the conversation unless you choose to do so. If you make a comment of your own, however, the system will set you to follow the conversation.

You can change whether you want to follow a conversation or not by choosing the link at the top of the conversation, as follows:

If you are following a number of conversations and would like to stop following all of them, the Unfollow All button on the Notifications page will unsubscribe you from all conversations you are currently following.

Other Notifications

In addition to the notifications about new items on Stitch, you will receive emails from the system at the following times:

When somebody wants to connect with you

If someone tries to connect with you by liking your profile or by sending you a request to message you, the system will send you an email notifying you about it. These notifications are fundamental to how communications work on Stitch and cannot be turned off.

When somebody sends you a message

Similarly, when someone you are connected to sends you a message, the system will send you an email notifying you about it. These notifications are fundamental to how communications work on Stitch and cannot be turned off.
