Message an unverified member

The rules for messaging unverified members on Stitch, and how to invite an unverified member to an in-person activity so they can get verified.

Written by Karen Fuser

Want to welcome a new member who hasn't been verified yet? Stitch limits messages to unverified members to keep the community safe, but you can still reach out for the purpose of inviting them to an in-person activity, where they can be welcomed and encouraged to get verified.

Who you can message, and why

To keep everyone safe, you can only message an unverified member to invite them to an in-person activity. (An unverified member is someone who hasn't yet completed Stitch's verification step. To learn how verification works, see Getting verified.)

Stitch used to let Full members message unverified members more freely, with on-screen reminders to keep the conversation focused on verification. A small number of members ignored those reminders, which put the wider community at risk so messaging unverified members is now limited to activity invites only.

When you can send an invite

You can send an activity invite to an unverified member when all of the following are true:

  • The member is within 50km of you.

  • You are registered to at least one upcoming in-person activity.

  • You are attending that activity - you don't need to be the organizer. Any attendee can send an invite.

How to send an invite

  1. On the Members page, click the Message button on the unverified member's profile, as you normally would.

  2. Instead of the usual message box, you'll see an invite prompt. Click Invite.

  3. Choose which in-person activity you'd like to invite the member to.

  4. Write a personal message encouraging them to come along, then send it.

Once you've sent the invite, the member can open the activity details and see its date, time, and location, and reply to your message. They can't click Attend or post comments on the event, they're coming as your guest, so look out for them and help them find you on the day.

Good to know

Because an invited member can't officially register, you'll need to stay in touch to bring them along. If you're not the organizer of the activity, let the organizer know an extra person is coming.

Activities without a strict limit on attendee numbers work best for inviting unverified members.
