Explains how and when Stitch uses a phone verification code to prevent someone else logging in to your Stitch account

As all members of Stitch know, one of the most important features of the community is how we keep our members safe. This starts with our verification system, but extends to many aspects of how member behavior is managed in the community.

One concern for us is that some members have chosen an insecure password when setting up their Stitch account, or used the same email and password they use on other websites.

That means that if any of those other websites were ever hacked, hackers would obtain access to that member's Stitch account. This isn't a theoretical threat: in 2024 we experienced an incident where one member's email address was hacked. This was fortunately reported to Stitch almost immediately, so we were able to address the situation very quickly, but it is not something we want to see happen again.

To this end, when you try to sign in to your Stitch account on a new device, you will be asked to confirm your login with a code that Stitch will send you via text message. This step makes it much harder for a hacker to gain access to your Stitch account, even if they have your password.

This step is called two-factor authentication, sometimes written as "2FA", on many websites.

You will only asked to do this once when logging in on a new device. Once you verify your login on that device you will be able to login as usual.

How does it work?

When you sign in to Stitch on a new device, you’ll be asked to verify your identity by entering a unique code sent to your phone via text message. When you see the message below, you should receive a text message via SMS within a few minutes. Simply enter the code you received, and hit Submit.

Once you’ve completed the 2FA process on a new device, you won’t need to go through it again on the same device.

What do I do if my phone can’t receive text messages?

If your phone can't receive text messages, click on Get another code and select the Call me option. You’ll receive your code via voice call instead, and your code will be read aloud to you.

If you are not able to verify your code, click the Having trouble? link and the Stitch Support team will help you out.
